Who is The Grinch?
The Grinch is the green, grumpy main character of How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, the 1957 children's book by American author Dr. Seuss. He lives alone in a cave on the mountain above the town of Whoville and dislikes everything about Christmas: the music, the food, the lights, and above all the cheerfulness of the Who's down in the valley. On Christmas Eve he decides to steal their whole celebration, dressed up as Father Christmas.
From grump to Christmas hero
What makes The Grinch such a beloved character is that he is the exact opposite of the traditional Christmas spirit, and yet it is he who, by the end of the story, grasps what Christmas is really about. Not the presents, not the decorations, but the people around you. That is why the story keeps coming back: the Chuck Jones animation from 1966, the live action film with Jim Carrey in 2000, and the animated version from 2018. Every generation has its own Grinch.
The Grinch in your Christmas decor
The Grinch works best as a wink in an otherwise classic Christmas tree or living room.
