A Christmas stocking is a large decorative sock you hang above the fireplace or along the bannister to be filled with small gifts. The tradition goes back to old Scandinavia, where people filled socks with hay for Odin's horse in the hope of a good harvest. Later the custom became Christian: children find their stocking on Christmas morning filled with sweets, mandarin oranges or a small toy.
These days the stocking is more than a way to hide presents. It hangs as decoration in its own right, sometimes alone, sometimes in a row of mismatched designs above the mantelpiece.
