Buying Christmas wreaths at The Christmas Shop

Buying Christmas wreaths at The Christmas Shop means choosing atmosphere with a personal touch. Where most wreaths arrive ready-made in a box, we're all about the interplay between the wreath and the ornaments you add to it. In our shop in Delft the wreaths hang richly decorated among the trees, so you can see exactly how a handful of glass baubles turns a simple wreath into a real eye-catcher. Online it works the same way: choose a base and finish it with the baubles, hangers and lights that suit your Christmas.

A Christmas wreath is a circular decoration made of real or artificial fir, used on the door, on the wall or laid flat on the table. Its round shape has long stood for togetherness and the endless cycle of the year. Dressed with berries, pine cones or ornaments, it becomes the festive centrepiece of your entrance.

A Christmas wreath for your front door

On the front door a Christmas wreath does most of the work. It greets everyone who rings the bell and sets the tone for what waits inside. Go for classic green with red berries and pine cones, or a sleek wreath with a few large glass baubles in a single colour: both work, as long as the wreath suits the rest of your Christmas decorations. Hang it with a sturdy door hook so the wood stays intact, and measure the spot first, a wreath covering about a third of the door looks best.

Decorating your wreath with ornaments

A wreath becomes truly yours the moment you decorate it. This is where our speciality comes in: we know glass baublesand handmade Christmas ornaments from makers such as Inge Glas and Kurt S. Adler. Tie a few ornaments loosely into the greenery with satin ribbon so they seem to float, and tuck pine cones, little birds or gingerbread figures between the branches for depth. Mix large and small pieces and keep to one colour or theme for a calm, considered look. A single striking ornament in the middle gives your wreath an instant focal point.

Christmas wreaths with lights

A little light brings a Christmas wreath to life. As the evenings draw in early, a warm glow turns your entrance into a beacon of cosiness. Wind a string of fine fairy lights evenly through the greenery and tuck the cable neatly towards a socket or timer plug. Choose warm white for that classic, snug feeling. Hang a lit wreath outdoors securely so it stays put in the wind, and use the same trick indoors above the dining table or along the banister.

The wreath indoors and as an Advent wreath

Indoors a Christmas wreath is more versatile than you might think. Lay it flat on the table with a few candles in the middle and you have an instant, atmospheric centrepiece for Christmas dinner. If you like counting down to Christmas, turn it into an Advent wreath with four candles, one for each Sunday of Advent. Hanging works too: with fine, almost invisible wire you can float a wreath above the table, an effect that always draws questions from guests.

Natural greenery or an artificial wreath

The choice between a natural and an artificial Christmas wreath mainly decides how long you'll enjoy it. A fresh fir wreath smells wonderful and feels authentic, but dries out and drops needles after a few weeks. An artificial wreath stays lovely season after season and can be dressed differently every year, so your Christmas is never quite the same twice. Many people combine the two: an artificial base as the foundation, topped up with a few fresh branches for the scent.
