Snacks ornaments

A glass frikandel speciaal in your Christmas tree. It sounds like a joke until you see it hang, and then comes the smile. Snack Christmas ornaments are mouth-blown glass baubles shaped like Dutch fried snacks: a bitterbal with paneermeel texture, a kroket roll with a golden-brown crust, a frikandel speciaal complete with mayonnaise, ketchup and chopped onions. Up close, the detail makes you look twice.

Snack Christmas ornaments at The Christmas Shop

Snack Christmas ornaments are the absurdly delightful corner of our food and drink Christmas ornaments. Glass renderings of Dutch fried snacks, mouth-blown and hand-painted, with details that reward a closer look. From a few metres away it's an ordinary bauble. Up close it's a bitterbal with realistic breading or a frikandel speciaal in its white snack-bar tray. The collection brings together work from Vondels (Amsterdam), HD Collection and Decoris.

Dutch fried snacks in glass

For anyone who has stood in front of a Dutch snackbar, this collection reads like a menu. A bitterbal with fine glitter that mimics the breaded surface, a broodje kroket (a kroket on a soft white bun) with a crust that almost looks deep-fried, and the frikandel speciaal in a white tray topped with mayonnaise, ketchup and chopped onions. Vondels designed its own version of the kroket, with hand-painted detail that makes the golden-brown crust come alive.

Borrel snacks and bitterballen

The Dutch borrel — a drink with savoury snacks before dinner — has its own ornament. The Decoris piece of three bitterballen on a plate with mustard and a small Dutch flag captures the whole tradition in one ornament. It's a piece that immediately starts conversations, especially at family gatherings where younger and older generations meet around the tree. Combine it with a glass cheese soufflé for a complete borrel corner.

The story behind Vondels

The most distinctive pieces in the collection come from Vondels. The Amsterdam brand was founded in 2015 by Yan Xu and Loesje Donner-Raedts, formerly the Christmas buyer at de Bijenkorf department store. Their idea was straightforward: a brand for luxury glass ornaments combining humour, design and craftsmanship. Within four years their work was sold in more than forty countries. The snacks line fits that philosophy: serious glasswork, unexpected subject matter.
