Buying pine cone Christmas ornaments at The Christmas Shop
A pine cone Christmas ornament is a hanging decoration shaped like a cone, usually made of blown glass and finished with a metal crown and a ribbon. It is one of the oldest shapes on the tree, from a time when people simply hung the real thing straight from the woods.
Over thirty pine cone ornaments make up this collection, from three different brands. Prices start at around three euros each. You can order online, or come and see them in our shop in the centre of Delft.
Glass pinecone ornaments
Glass gives a pine cone a depth that plastic never quite reaches. Nearly every cone here is blown glass, with each scale catching the light at a slightly different angle. Where most shops sell cones by the dozen in plastic, you buy them singly here, so you can pick the exact copper or champagne shade that suits the rest of your Christmas ornaments. Two are porcelain, with a matte finish that keeps things quiet. The colours run well past the brown you might expect from a cone: gold, copper, silver, champagne and even orange and purple sit alongside each other.
Cones from Inge Glas, Goodwill and Decoris
Three brands fill this collection and each does something different. Inge Glas Magic produces glass decorations in Germany and supplies the traditional cone: brown glass, gold crown, sometimes a light dusting of glitter. Goodwill, a Belgian brand, is the more playful of the three, with colours like champagne and copper. Decoris sits in between and is keenly priced. All three are on the shelves in Delft, so you can hold a cone up to the light before deciding.
Small and large pine cones as decoration
Size decides where a cone works best. The small ones, only a few centimetres across, disappear neatly between the branches and fill the gaps between your baubles. The larger ones, up to roughly sixteen centimetres, belong at the front, or nowhere near the tree at all: in a bowl on the table, on a wreath, or among Christmas branches along the mantelpiece. Pair them with mushroom ornaments and the whole tree leans woodland. Boxed on its own, a glass cone also makes a small gift that rarely misses, particularly if you pick a colour someone already uses at home.
