Buy a Christmas music box at The Christmas Shop
A Christmas music box is one of those bits of Christmas you won't want to be without once you've heard it play. We stock dozens of them, from a compact Decoris musical box to a large music boxby Spieluhrenwelt. Most models are mechanical: you wind them up underneath, no batteries needed. Want to see and hear one play first? Pop into our shop in Delft.
What is a Christmas music box?
A Christmas music box is a decorative piece with a small mechanical movement that plays a melody when you wind it up. The festive versions almost always move too: a turning carousel, a train circling the tree, or a figure rocking gently. The classic tunes are O Christmas Tree, Silent Night and Jingle Bells.
Christmas tree music box and carousel
The tree and the carousel are the two classics in this category. Inside the Spieluhrenwelt trees a little train runs around the trunk, tiny nutcrackers dance a ballet, or presents sit under the branches. The carousel brings a touch of the fairground home: richly decorated horses or a reindeer sleigh that turn as soon as the music starts. Lovely under the tree, lovely on a sideboard, and good company well beyond December.
Music boxes by Spieluhrenwelt, Villeroy & Boch and Goodwill
At Spieluhrenwelt the German tradition of mechanical clockwork lives on in modern Christmas decorations. The porcelain music boxes by Villeroy & Boch belong to the same Christmas Toys collection as the Christmas mugs, crisp white and hand-painted, easy to keep building on year after year. The Belgian brand Goodwill has been going since 1986 and has a signature of its own: a little more character, often with a nutcracker or a Ferris wheel taking the lead.
A music box as a Christmas gift
A musical box isn't something you'll find in every home, which is exactly what makes it such a good gift. The chances the recipient already owns one are slim, and a good music box lasts for decades. For a baby's first Christmas a calm tune suits best, while a Goodwill nutcracker is a safe bet for a lover of tradition. Prefer a snow globe with music? Many of ours play a carol and move along with it.
