Buying LED dinner candles at The Christmas Shop
An LED dinner candle is a slim taper candle wrapped in a layer of real wax, with a small light instead of a flame. The glow flickers and shifts, so from a metre away you would struggle to tell it apart from the real thing. What you do notice: no smoke, no wax on the tablecloth, nothing to keep an eye on.
Just over forty variants sit in the collection, across two brands. Lumineo covers the affordable end in sets of two, in almost twenty colours. LED dinner candles with a timer
The built-in timer runs on a fixed rhythm of six hours on, eighteen hours off. Switch a candle on at six in the evening and it burns until midnight, then lights again at six the next evening entirely on its own. There is nothing to programme. Each candle takes two AAA batteries, fitted through the opening in the base, and because the candle spends most of the day switched off, a set of batteries lasts a full season.
Straight, twisted or ribbed, in almost twenty colours
The finish of the wax is what sets the models apart. Straight candles are clean and timeless, twisted ones carry a spiral that catches the light differently, and ribbed ones look a little sturdier. Colours run from quiet to bold: cream, beige, sand, white, grey and anthracite on one side, Christmas red, burgundy, green, pink and lilac on the other, with gold, silver and pearl sitting somewhere in between.
From candlestick to a fully dressed table
A dinner candle only works properly in the right holder. The slim 2 centimetre base fits most candlesticks, and the candles also sit well on a tray, in an advent wreath or among the greenery on a mantelpiece.
