Inge Glas Christmas ornaments at The Christmas Shop
Inge Glas Christmas ornaments are mouth-blown glass decorations from Neustadt bei Coburg in northern Bavaria, recognisable by the little crown with a five-pointed star on top. That crown is a registered trademark, used only on pieces made in the company's own workshops. We stock hundreds of designs, from a tiny acorn to a Father Christmas you can't miss. Much of the collection is on display in our shop in Delft, so you can see how the glass catches the light. For the story behind the brand, visit our Inge Glas Manufaktur page.
Mouth-blown glass ornaments, painted by hand
Every Inge Glas ornament is blown by mouth over a flame. The glassblower shapes it freely or blows it into a metal mould, and the company keeps thousands of them. The glass is then silvered on the inside with genuine sterling silver, which is where that deep, warm glow comes from. Only then does a painter add the colours, glitter and little faces by hand. That's why no two of these German glass ornaments are ever quite alike.
The Christmas pickle and other food ornaments
If you grew up in the United States, you probably know the custom: a glass pickle hidden in the tree, and a little extra present for whoever finds it first. The Inge Glas pickle is one of our bestsellers, and it has plenty of company. Think watermelon, banana, potato and pepper, or something sweeter like a madeleine, a macaron or a cappuccino. You'll find more of them among our food and drink Christmas ornaments.
Animal Christmas ornaments
Dog lovers will spot the dachshund and the West Highland terrier straight away, but the menagerie goes further: a rabbit with a pocket watch, a koala, a frog and a duck in a Santa hat. Some animals sit on a clip instead of hanging from a hook, like the hedgehog, the owl and the gecko. Just clip them onto a branch. Looking for birds? Annual ornaments and collector's pieces
For collectors, the annual Father Christmas ornament is a piece to look out for. The Chinese zodiac designs, such as the Year of the Buffalo or the Year of the Tiger, are popular too, and they make a thoughtful gift for someone born in that year. An Inge Glas ornament is small, but treat it with care and it will come out of its box every December for years to come.
